As we move into August, the energy from our successful conference in Columbus this past April is still with us. It was a fantastic gathering of talented and dedicated instructors, and we're so grateful for the enthusiastic participation that made it such a memorable event. Your feedback has been invaluable, and we're already using it to plan an even better conference for the future.
We're thrilled to announce that our next annual conference will be held in New Orleans, Louisiana, April 10-12, 2026.
The board is hard at work planning an incredible event filled with inspiring workshops, insightful panels, and invaluable networking opportunities. Imagine connecting with fellow instructors in this vibrant, historic city. We can't wait to see you there. Stay tuned for more details on registration, workshops, and speakers!
Please note that our membership rates will be increasing on September 1, 2025.

Lifetime membership will be $600.
If you've been considering joining, renewing or upgrading your membership, now is the perfect time to do so at the current rates. Your membership is vital to the growth and success of the AWMAI, allowing us to continue providing valuable resources and opportunities for our community.
Finally, as I shared at the last conference, I will be stepping down from my role as Executive Director. This was a difficult decision, as I am deeply passionate about AWMAI's mission and the incredible community we've built. However, I believe it's the right time for new perspectives to guide our organization forward.
We are currently seeking a dynamic and dedicated individual to become our next Executive Director. This is an exciting opportunity to lead a thriving association and champion the growth and empowerment of women in martial arts. We're looking for someone with strong leadership skills, a deep understanding of the martial arts landscape, and a passion for our mission.
If you or someone you know would be a great fit, we encourage you to learn more about the role and the application process on our website.
Thank you for your unwavering support. I am confident in the bright future of our organization and look forward to seeing the incredible things we will continue to achieve together.
We’re thrilled to announce that the vibrant city of New Orleans, LA will host our 2026 conference. The event will take place April 10 - 12 at the DoubleTree by Hilton New Orleans, located right in the heart of downtown, directly across from Canal Street and overlooking the Mississippi River.
Certification Director, Amelia Jones Sitting down, reflecting on the conference just past. What are the feelings? Awe and reverence for the founders, Their foresight and fortitude. Inspiration for so many things: The Spiral opening envisioning all who have come before us and future generations. The synchronicity of Sensei Jamie meeting Shihan Masi’s former student and inviting him to participate in the demo, from generation to generation. The realization that we are not alone, that we are stronger together. Unstoppable, in fact. We have much more in common than our differences. Martial arts and ESD are like two wings of the same bird. De un pájaro son dos alas. Gratitude for our lives in the women’s martial arts community, and the greater martial arts world. Hope for the future. Healing in body and spirit. Secure in the knowledge that we have paved a way, we have not dropped the ball and we are prepared to support the young ones. A deep love for the Sisterhood, deep appreciation for the Allies. Resolve to keep building, keep recruiting, keep spreading the good word. Resist. | Events Director, Sarah Sponzo
25 Powerful Years! Over the past weeks, I’ve been thinking about our organization’s 25-year history and our amazing celebration! What an achievement! AWMAI proudly marked this milestone by bringing together an amazing group of martial artists, teachers, and friends from all corners for an unforgettable weekend of training, connection, and celebration. From start to finish, the conference was a success. Outstanding instructors led dynamic, inspiring sessions that blended traditional martial arts techniques with innovative teaching approaches and ideas. The energy in each room was palpable, as attendees had the opportunity to learn and grow together in a supportive, empowering environment. We were also treated to moving presentations by the AWMAI founders, whose vision and leadership helped shape the strong, inclusive community we celebrate today. One of the weekend’s highlights was the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, honoring remarkable women who have made long- lasting contributions to the martial arts world. Their stories inspired everyone present and reminded us of the depth of talent and dedication within our community. Of course, no celebration is complete without good food and great company. The conference, as always, offered plenty of opportunities to reconnect with old friends, forge new bonds, and reflect on how far we've come. It’s always an honor to be among this outstanding group and I am always in awe of the cumulative number of years of experience and knowledge in the room. We are so lucky. Now! We’re not resting on our laurels. We’re off and running planning the next event! We’re so excited to share plans for 2026 – see the announcement in this newsletter and on social media. As always, if there is anything you’d like to suggest or you have any questions, drop me a note (events@awmai.org). THANK YOU for your support and enthusiasm! Here’s to the next 25 years of strength, connection, and transformation! |
Being a part of AWMAI since 2018, attending conferences and Teachers' Lounges has brought such rich experiences to my martial arts journey. I'm amazed with the history, wisdom and experiences of all these teachers and leaders that share so much and make my path more rewarding. I remember when I was watching a martial arts demonstration at the NWMAF conference a few years ago and thinking how glad I was that I finally found all these powerful and supportive women. Studies show that women are happier when we have a community of women supporting us. I hope you'll join for an affordable $60/year or for a lifetime for $600 and consider joining us at the Teachers' Lounges and 2026 conference! |
The strength of an organization is built on its members, and it was wonderful to meet and share time with so many of you in Columbus. Once again, I left the conference feeling energized as a teacher, a business owner, and a martial artist. I love bringing home a notebook full of new ideas shared by so many talented, knowledgeable, and successful colleagues! There are many ways YOU can help keep our organization strong into the future. If you haven't done so already, please consider joining as a member. Members receive great networking opportunities like our upcoming Teachers' Lounge and a discount on the annual conference. You can also make a donation to support our general operations or the Barbara Feldman Memorial Scholarship Fund, which provides financial support to individuals to attend the annual conference. Thanks to your generosity, we were able to grant more than $5,000 in scholarships in 2025! I'm truly grateful for the energy, knowledge, and friendships that the AWMAI has brought to me and my practice. I'm looking forward to sharing time together at upcoming events! |
![]() | One of our esteemed members -- and Hall of Fame recipients -- Instructor Lisa Santi, is hosting a one-day martial arts training in October. Four other AWMAI Hall of Fame recipients [Grand Master Jaye Spiro, Shifu/Sensei Kore Grate, SifuWendy Lathrup and Sensei Teddie Linder] are also teaching, so this is an event you don't want to miss! |
EVERY DAY THIS CONJURING I wrote the following poem more than 40 years ago, a portent and a portal to what had already become a lifelong spiritual journey of exploring and embodying the sacred sequences and movement languages of the martial arts. When I performed "Martial Artist" recently as a Poemotion piece, weaving spoken word and martial arts based dance, I could feel the depth and expanse of layered awareness that this ongoing work gives me access to. |
